The IRS offers a free Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)—a 6-digit code that helps prevent someone else from filing a tax return using your SSN/ITIN. When you have an IP PIN, the IRS uses it to confirm it’s really you filing the return.
How it’s used
You enter the IP PIN on your federal return (or provide it to your tax professional).
If you e-file without the correct IP PIN, the IRS will reject the return. Paper returns can be delayed for identity verification.
Benefits
Strong protection against tax-related identity theft
Helps avoid the headache of fraudulent returns and refund delays
Good to know
It renews yearly (a new IP PIN is generated each calendar year).
If you misplace it, it can slow down filing—so store it securely and don’t email/text it.
How to get it
Fastest: request it through your IRS Online Account.
